Susie Travis is a passionate oboist, orchestral musician, and aspiring arts administrator who wishes to foster community, diversity, and collaboration through her work. Having recently participated in the 2026 European Intercultural Youth Orchestra known as BISYOC, Susie was deeply inspired by both the orchestral experience and intercultural exchange of the course, which led her to join the administrative team as an intern for the 2027 program.
Susie is currently pursuing a B.M. in music performance at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where she studies with Jane Marvine. An experienced orchestral and ensemble player, she currently plays in various Peabody groups throughout each academic year, including the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Concert Orchestra, and Peabody Wind Ensemble. She got her start in ensemble playing as a high school student playing with the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra and Osher Wind Ensemble of the University of Southern Maine.
Although Susie has always loved to play, the thing which really drew her to music was her passion for its ability to bring people together. The desire to connect people through music has led her to explore roles which allow her to engage more directly with that goal. In her senior year of high school, in an effort to expand outreach and impact through music, Susie pitched the idea to create a Wind Ensemble in addition to the school’s existing Concert Band, leaving the school with one more ensemble after her graduation. Through her internship at BISYOC, Susie was tasked with programming the music for the 2027 course. She wishes to explore diverse programming and regards BISYOC as a perfect opportunity for this interest due to the festival’s focus on diversity and intercultural exchange. As she moves forward, Susie looks to take on more administrative roles which will allow her to support her desire to foster community and connection through music.
